Allow Us to Re-Introduce Ourselves

Our name is Hi/Lo. Although our name is fairly new to the business, we've actually been around for a few decades. Our head honcho Jason has been in the industry since he was sixteen (no need to do the math). Our leading lady Karri has been by Jay's side for almost 30 years, and is extremely well-versed when it comes to customer service. Their youngest daughter Hannah, having worked with her parents on and off since she was 16, is now helping them settle into what is essentially the final installment of their automotive business venture: Hi/Lo Voltage Auto Repair & Diagnostics. We'll get more into personal matters in a moment, but for now let's talk shop.

We're a small, family-owned business that takes pride in providing a transparent, trustworthy, and exceptional automotive service experience. We believe every customer is like family, and strive to make each repair experience as pleasant as possible. We're also firm in our belief that the automotive industry needs to take greater steps in reducing the ever-growing "carbon footprint." One of our main goals is to make adjustments and changes in order to minimize our environmental impact while providing top-notch repairs.

We specialize in drivability diagnostics and proudly offer a wide range of services for most automotive makes and models. Jason is an ASE-certified technician and licensed California smog inspector/repair tech, bringing expert knowledge to each job. Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and tools, we are ready and able to tackle any challenge–whether it be routine brake services, electrical diagnostics, or engine and transmission repairs.

We can be found at 257 North Emerald Drive Ste C, Vista, CA 92083.

WHO'S RUNNING THIS SHOW?

Let's dive a little deeper into who's fixing your cars

Now that formal introductions are out of the way, we can dive a little deeper into who we are and why we’re doing this.

As you may know by now, Jason (aka Jay) is a seasoned vet in the industry. He was only 16 when he started working at a little service garage at a gas station in Carlsbad. It was there he began to show his innate ability to diagnose issues early on, even when others struggled. This fueled his passion and a keen interest in redefining the auto repair experience as a whole, eventually driving him to open Hi/Lo Voltage Auto Diagnostics and Repair in May of 2024—the shop that represents his vision of a passionate interest in emerging technologies in the automotive world and ultimately reimagining the way auto repairs work.

If you’ve called or walked into the shop, there’s a very good chance you’ve had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Karri. Married to Jay for almost 30 years, her automotive world experience essentially began with him. She spent several years learning the ins-and-outs of customer relations, and worked to become our Customer Relations Specialist. As an integral part of the Hi/Lo vision, she demonstrates her love for customers with everyone she meets and will immediately make anyone feel at home. Her warmth and hospitality fully support our belief that auto repairs should be seamless and soothing.

Working mostly behind the scenes, their youngest daughter Hannah is quickly learning all the aspects of this family business. As Jay and Karri’s daughter, she has grown up in the automotive world, and began involving herself directly when she was about 16 years old. Now, almost a decade later, she is taking all the knowledge acquired through the years and applying it to our shop. She has devoted much of her time to managing our social media pages and website, overseeing aspects of general operations, and is currently training to be an automotive technician. Equipped with her parents’ vision for the future of the shop and the industry, she fully understands the importance of being as eco-friendly as possible. She is striving to learn how to improve the direction of the auto industry by working to reduce our environmental impact, while still ensuring the highest quality repair work is provided to each customer.

Our technician, Esteban, became interested in learning car repairs around the age of 18, mainly because his car started breaking down. Throughout the years, he has gained valuable knowledge and experience, allowing him the ability to diagnose and repair almost any automotive issues. He began working for Jay, who quickly realized Esteban’s potential, and assisted in fine-tuning his skills. Jay now fully trusts him with both simple and difficult diagnostics and repairs alike. Esteban is learning welding, while maintaining his ability to fix cars in a reliable and timely manner. He continuously contributes and supports our vision of an all-around improved automotive service experience.

The Big Picture

We’ve been doing our research and learning which steps to take to practice sustainability in our shop. While we continue taking these steps and growing with the industry, we will consistently provide a transparent and trustworthy auto repair experience, and offer you a steadfast place with friendly faces to trust for the utmost quality repairs on your vehicles in this fast moving and sometimes intimidating industry. In short: a trusted mechanic who you know will take good care of you and your car, as well as the planet.

How To Know When To Bring Your Vehicle In

If you’re not sure about the status of your brakes, or any other part of your car, it’s always a good idea to bring it in and get it inspected. We offer a multi-point inspection, where one of the first things we check is the health of your brakes.

Having your brakes inspected annually or every 12,000 miles is recommended, regardless of the signs shown. However, if you notice any changes in braking performance, please schedule an inspection immediately. Here are some changes to take note of:

  • Annoying Noises

The most recognizable sign is unusual noises when you apply your brakes. Listen for squealing or grinding, which can indicate worn brake pads or damaged rotors. The initial reaction to these unpleasant sounds may be to just turn up the radio and hope it goes away. This, unfortunately, is not the correct solution. As with most things, the longer the issue persists, the worse it may be ultimately. Putting off getting your brakes checked out could be dangerous and costly.

  • Spongy Brake Pedals

Another sign is what we like to call “spongy” brake pedals, indicating reduced responsiveness. If it feels like it takes more pressure than usual to slow down, you may have air in your brake lines or leaking brake fluid. This requires immediate attention from an automotive professional, so please contact our team to get this resolved ASAP.

  • Bad Vibes

Make sure to check on your car’s “vibe”. If you start feeling vibrations or pulsating while braking, it could be a sign of warped rotors or uneven wear. This is not only uncomfortable, but also hinders the reliability of your brakes. We assess the condition of your rotors and recommend necessary resurfacing or replacements.

  • Warning Lights

Nowadays, vehicles have advanced sensor systems that monitor potential issues. The anti-lock braking system is often overlooked, but we can determine the culprit with diagnostics when the warning light comes on. If your car has brake warning lights (ABS) that come on, please call us to schedule a brake inspection immediately. Our team will check if it’s a minor component, or something more serious. Our inspection process will ensure all of your braking functions are running correctly, and resolve any issues as needed.

  • Longer Braking Distances

If you notice it takes longer between braking and stopping, it could be an indication of a major issue. It could be caused by worn-out brake pads, or contaminated brake fluid. Either way, it could reduce your reaction time in emergencies which could be dangerous and lead to undesirable outcomes. Our team will address any issues we find and ensure proper brake function.
